PaulCamper Apps

Task and my role. Design an app for handy camper renting management. Improve the existing application for the renter. I was responsible for UX research, interface structure, visual style, and design system. Worked closely with developers and product managers.

About

PaulCamper is an awesome RV rental marketplace where you can rent RVs and connect with fellow camper enthusiasts all across Germany. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a long road trip, it's a great place to find the perfect ride and share your love for adventure with others!

Lender App

Previously, managing camper rentals, chatting with renters, and so on were only available on the web platform, which made life very difficult for lenders. Designed app greatly simplified all these processes.

Part 1. Bookings.

It all starts with incoming bookings. We send push notifications so that the lender doesn't miss anything and can respond as soon as possible.

Bookings appear here from top to bottom in order of time. After payment, the bookings move to the Accepted section.

Lender can change the dates and even the price, or choose not to change anything and accept offer as is. And wait for payment.

Why does the lender see the contacts of a potential renter?

Contacts are needed for a more detailed understanding of the lender to whom they trust their beloved camper. Renting outside of the service is simply not rational because the service insures the trip and guarantees the money. Secondly, it is of course the German mentality. Such a close-knit community of camper lovers.

When the renter pay, the booking is considered finalized and the booking change status.

Now the lender has all the information about the renter and the trip.

All that remains is to wait for the moment to hand over the keys and get the cash deposit form renter..

Part 2. Chat.

Messages are super important for everyone to stay in the loop. The lender needs to know about the trip, and the renter wants to get the lowdown on the camper. This feature really shines during the trip, keeping the lines of communication open and helping renters tackle any issues from afar.

Everything here is classic: notifications, badges, and the usual set of messaging features. Chats related to past bookings are automatically archived.

I’ve added an option to accept bookings through chat too! At the top, you’ll see a link with the camper's name and trip dates, making it easier for the lender to navigate.

Part 3. Calendar.

The calendar is super handy for lenders. Before, in the web version, they had to spend a lot of time checking bookings and manually blocking dates if campers were rented out for late or early reservations. But with the mobile version of the calendar, we’ve made things easier by automating some of those tasks.

Unavailable dates are easily read and reduce visual clutter.

The lender can block any available dates and leave a message for themselves.

With a tap on the booked dates, it's easy to check the booking or contact the renter.

The cleaning of the camper and preparation for handover is the responsibility of the lender, so we suggest automating the time for cleaning.

The seasonal view is a type of global pricing plan that is rarely accessed.

You can select dates and set any type of season or special offer.

A pricing view is also provided. And yes, bookings are displayed here as well.

Season prices and their quantities are configured in the camper's profile. This is usually a one-time setup.

Part 4. Public requests.

Basically, it allows renters on the website to make a public request. For example, they can say, "I need a camper for 5 days to hit up a festival with a friend on August 14-19," and they can add details like the city and budget.

If a camper matches or is close to what they’re looking for, it shows up in the Requests tab where they can check it out, negotiate, or cancel. This is really aimed more at renters than lenders, and it hasn’t really taken off with lenders yet.

This feature was created by my colleague, and I won’t dive into the details here. It’s better to set on pause and meet my dog.

Meet Venik, the adorable miniature schnauzer! His name actually means 'broom' in English. Just picture him posing against a stunning sunset in the mountains of Sochi, Krasnaya Polyana, Russia.

Alright, let’s dive back into the story!

Part 5. Dashboard and Profile.

A profile is just a profile, right? Nothing too exciting there. I’ll just highlight the cool stuff we’ve rolled out that’s really worth checking out.

You’ll find basic stats, community updates, and camper profiles, all with a publication indicator.

Camps are super popular with renters, and they’ve asked for a notification feature to let them know when the next tickets drop.

We’ve got a referral program where you can resend invites and check out your earnings history.

PaulsCamp

PaulCamps hosts festivals for sharing experiences among renters, along with masterclasses from our team. We do this twice a year, right before and after the season, usually in April and October.

Designers get to connect directly with renters, hear their challenges, and jot down suggestions. We conduct a ton of interviews over three days of the camps.

Plus, diving into the camper community vibe and bonding with the team makes for unforgettable memories.

Back then, there was no text recognition from the neural network, so users had to manually enter their ID or passport numbers.

When users enter their driver’s license info, we let them know exactly what we need.

The same applies to the back side, and if it’s a date, we pull up the numeric keyboard. Plus, on both screens, the input field is focused as soon as you enter.

The seasonal view is a type of global pricing plan that is rarely accessed.

A pricing view is also provided. And yes, bookings are displayed here as well.

You can select dates and set any type of season or special offer.

Lender App results

Launching the mobile app for RV owners significantly improved platform engagement: average response time to rental requests dropped from 3 days to just 2–3 hours, and user activity increased by 65%. Thanks to the optimized mobile UX and streamlined booking journey, completed bookings via mobile grew by 35%.

Renter App

When I hopped on the project, the app was already up and running. My job was to make sure it matched the style guide I created. But the bulk of the traffic was still coming from the website.

Welcome to the main screen! It’s pretty standard for apps like this, but I’ve given the design a fresh twist.

Search results are here! I added a slider so you can check out photos without diving into each listing.

Part 1. Choosing camper.

Beyond the key details on the camper’s card, there are plenty of extra features that renters check out. We’ve added social sharing options and a way to save favorites. You can find your favorite campers in your profile.

The first screen shows all the essentials: technical specs, capacity, and ratings.

Insurance gives renters peace of mind when choosing. The basic coverage applies to all campers on the platform.

Just a heads up: the deposit is paid in cash, and rental start and end times can vary between owners.

Part 2. Request booking.

Once a renter picks a camper, the booking process kicks in. It’s a bit different from what you might expect. First, the renter shares their travel plans and group size, creating a sort of request. If the lender is on board, they’ll approve it.

Here's the price breakdown! The freebies are part of what we promise our clients, making it super easy for renters to book. They love seeing that everything's included in the price—no hidden fees here!

Knowing the planned distance helps the lender figure out if maintenance might be needed along the way. If so, they can pass it off to someone else who's traveling a shorter route before any maintenance is done.

You can pick up early or return late for an extra fee since the lender loses a day or two.

Some quirks of lenders

One cool trend in camping is using a camper for both staying and getting around at festivals. But a lot of lenders are hesitant about this because of the potential for damage, so they often say "No festivals" right at the top of their listings.

On the flip side, some lenders actually create campers specifically for festival fun!

Either way, lenders usually want a quick rundown of your trip since campers are like family to them, and they can be pretty picky.

Part 3. Payment.

The payment process has been made as informative and straightforward as possible. We specifically reduced the number of clicks, as there were enough drops at this stage.

The lender received the request. We are notifying about this with the status and temporary state of the button.

As soon as the lender approves the request, the renter can start the payment.

In addition to the usual card, bank transfer payments are of interest. I was surprised, but this is normal for Germany. A couple of very popular payment services in Europe have also been added.

Part 4. On the road.

Everyone's paid up! Now let’s hit the road and start the adventure!

After you book, just drop a message to the lender in the chat to go over the details more casually.

When the renter is ready to pick up the camper, we’ll show everything you need right on the first screen: the camper’s make and number, plus the address and a link to Google Maps for easy navigation.

The renter is on the road now! They’ll need the lender’s phone number or chat with them. If a second driver needs to hop on, they can just share their license anytime. This is usually sorted out after booking.

Renter app results

We’ve made the app way better for camping fans! Booking and paying is now super easy. Our devs worked hard to speed things up by rewriting some parts from scratch.

For instance, I set up a text input that automatically focuses when you enter the screen. If you’re entering numbers, it shows just the numeric keyboard, and we’ve got save and cancel buttons right above keyboard instead of at the top. Pretty cool, right?

COVID and Acquisition

COVID had a rather tragic impact on the company, forcing us to part ways with many employees (I myself moved on to a new project - I didn't want to wait) and somehow stay afloat. As a result, in 2022, the company was acquired by a major competitor, Camplify (Australia). Currently, they have merged the two applications into one super app based on Camplify's visual design.
